Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS)

What's up with PAWS?

Here are the BULLET INFO for the attached photos:

* Last Sunday, The Philippine Animal Welfare Society opened its shelter to the animals in nearby areas who were displaced by the floods brought about by typhoon 'Ondoy.'

* Animals started coming in early Monday morning.

* The PAWS rescue team composed of Dr. Nielsen Donato, Dr. Wilford Almora, Dr. David Arceo, Dr. Donnie Villanueva, May Angela Felix and Cha Laxamana went to Provident Village on Tuesday to assess the damage and aid in the rescue of animals left there. Meanwhile, PAWS Program Director Anna Cabrera and PAWS Volunteer John Tangkengco, headed to Greenfields Subdivision in Pasig with "Born to be Wild's" (a local TV show featuring animal stories) Dr. Ferds Recio

*In Pasig, Cabrera and Tangkengko were not allowed onto the rubberboats to try to rescue animals as they were told that human rescues were still ongoing and that humans were the priority. PAWS requested instead that they be informed of the exact location of animals that the human rescue teams were going to leave behind. Flood waters in Pasig ranged from ankle-high to over eight feet in some areas - even if it has been four days since the onslaught of rains.
* At Provident Village, the team was able to cover & assess 1/3 of the area. Along the way, they encountered 5 dead dogs and 3 dead cats.

* Among the dogs they were able to rescue is Lyndon, a mongrel who was left by his owner when the owner evacuated the house. Lyndon was found on the roof looking down excitedly as the rescue team went up to retrieve him. He was very friendly and started licking everyone's face to show how happy he was that he was finally rescued

* Another dog the PAWS team encountered was a German Shepherd who neighbors said swam to the roof when flood waters rose up. He was carefully captured and loaded at the back of the rescue vehicle

* Finally, a cat and a red-earned slider turtle were also saved and all of them are now back at the PAWS Shelter receiving medical care.

* In Pasig where waters are still chest high

* There is now a total of 16 animals at the shelter - all victims of the devastating storm. PAWS will continue with its rescue efforts in the coming days.

If you can do something, please do. give food and water to the animals to keep them alive. The owners are in violation of the animal welfare act by neglecting the animals and one of them even died. this is already a criminal offense. If you can talk to your neighbor in giving up their dogs, please do. And if you can find good homes for them, it would greatly help us. If they won't give up their dog and continue to neglect them, you can report them to your barangay and make sure you have a copy of the RA8485. (can be found at www.paws.org.ph)

reports like these should be complete with your name, contact no, address and the name address of the owner of the dogs. Email to PAWS at philpaws@yahoo.com

I saw more photos of this animal rescue operation in Doc Nielsen Donato's Facebook albums (he's my cats vet). The team really braved floodwaters and mud and climbed rooftops just to rescue the animals! God bless you all! It's inspiring, but heartbreaking at the same time to see these animals suffer from the wrongdoings of mankind (not taking care of our environment, abusing our natural resources, etc.).

thank you, PAWS, for saving those animals from the flood and continuing to save animals every day. Do you know if there are any animal shelters here in the south? I'm from Paranaque kasi. Sometime last year while I was walking down the street near BF homes, I saw a group of 3 dogs walking side by side on a street. Sabay-sabay din sila kung tumawid. They were a quiet group and I didn't hear one bark from them and they just kept walking. Gusto ko na sana silang kunin pero di ko alam kung san ko sila dadalhin. Kung pwede ko lang sana sila iuwi ginawa ko na. Grrr..naiinis talaga ako sa sarili ko for being helpless at that time.*sighs* I sometimes wonder what became of those dogs.
